Sinochem News reported on November 4, according to Hydrocarbon Processing News, Royal Dutch Shell said on Thursday that it plans to shift its Shell Rhineland refinery in Wesseling, Germany from crude oil to low-carbon or zero-carbon from 2025.
Shell has set a goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
According to its transformation plan, the complex will become the Shell Rhineland Energy and Chemical Park, with a focus on hydrogen derived from renewable energy, sustainable aviation fuel and renewable liquefied natural gas
Weathering is one of the two parts that make up the Shell Rhineland refinery complex with a total production capacity of 340,000 barrels per day, of which it accounts for 150,000 barrels per day
Shell's German business unit said in a statement that according to the plan, another refinery, Godorf, will continue to refine crude oil into mineral oil products according to the plan, but has not yet received a final investment decision (FID)
These factories employ a total of 3,000 employees, half of which are in Shell and the rest are in contractor companies
In July, Shell launched the largest 10-MW hydrogen electrolysis plant in Europe, Refhyne, in Wesseling to produce green fuels
The FID to expand the scale of 10 megawatts to 100 megawatts has not yet been received, but EU funding has been approved
