Wärtsilä Group's East Africa division announced that it has won two EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contracts to develop grid-connected solar farms in Kenya with a capacity of 40 MW
    each.
    Construction
is expected to begin in 2019.

The East African country, with insufficient electricity supply, is boosting production through renewable energy sources such as wind and geothermal, as it reduces its reliance on
    expensive diesel power plants.
Kenya announced about 15 utility-scale solar projects with a total capacity of 526 megawatts
, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Wärtsilä Group project leaders said one of its projects in Kesses, about 290 kilometres northwest of the capital Nairobi, is owned by Alten Renewable Energy Developments BV and is expected to close financially by March 2019
    .

He added, "This will be our first solar project
    in East Africa.
Renewable energy is the next frontier
    .
He did not refuse to disclose the cost of the plant, but it would cost an average of $1 million per megawatt to develop a project
    of this size.

In addition, a second plant is planned to be built
    in the coastal Lamu area.
The developer is negotiating a power purchase agreement with Kenya Power and the project should be connected
    in June 2020.
Wärtsilä has the option to purchase a 19.
