By 2050, the worsening effects of climate change could force more than 143 million people to migrate
across countries.
World Bank: Climate change could force 143 million people to migrate by 2050
The World Bank warns that this will affect three densely populated regions in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America, creating an imminent human crisis and threatening the development process
.
Unless urgent climate and development action is taken globally and nationally, the three regions could collectively deal with 143 million "internal climate migrants"
over the next three decades, a new World Bank report finds.
As water scarcity, crop failures, rising sea levels and storm surges become increasingly problematic, many people will be forced to move
from areas of their countries that are increasingly unscrupulous.
Through concerted action, including global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strong development planning, the World Bank says the worst-case scenario could be mitigated, reducing migration by up to 80 percent, or more than 100 million people
.
Kanta Kumari Rigaud, author of the report, said: "Without the right planning and support, people migrating from rural to urban areas may face new and even more dangerous risks
.
Due to the pressure on scarce resources, we can see growing tensions and conflicts
.
But this is not necessarily the future
.
While internal climate migration is becoming a reality, it will not be a crisis
if we plan and act now.
