On March 23, Westlake Chemical announced that its plant in Pernis, the Netherlands (with a production capacity of 100,000 tons/year) has obtained the International Sustainable Development and Carbon Emissions (ISCC+) certification
.
The site is certified mass balance for the tracking and handling of sustainable materials in the production of epoxy resin products
.
This is an important step in Westlake Epoxy's strategy to integrate renewable carbon materials into its raw material supply chain, while reducing energy use and greenhouse gas emissions
.
ISCC+ provides an international, practical and transparent system for the certification of bio-based, bio-cyclic and circular raw materials at all levels of the supply chain
.
ISCC+ certification recognizes Westlake Epoxy (formerly Hexion BV)'s commitment to environmentally, socially and economically sustainable production by tracking its existing feedstock portfolio and replacing fossil materials with renewable resources
.
The aromatic monomers of liquid epoxy resins produced at the Pernis facility are certified mass balance and can be replaced by bio-based alternatives
.
These include phenol and acetone, which are used to make bisphenol A (BPA), a key component in the manufacture of epoxy resins
.
This latest certification reflects Westlake's ongoing commitment to operating in a more environmentally friendly manner
.
Most recently, Westlake Epoxy's European operations also received a Platinum rating from EcoVadis, the world's largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings
.
Westlake Epoxy serves a variety of industries including adhesives, aerospace, automotive, civil engineering and construction, composites and wind energy, electronics, electronic laminates, and marine and protective coatings
