Walmart is accelerating plans to cut "substantial" virgin plastic use by 2025, a Walmart spokesman said on May 12, becoming the latest company to agree to such cuts
.
Walmart and shareholder rights group As You Sow agreed on May 11 to cut single-use plastic use and reliance on virgin plastic
.
"We've only accelerated this year's plans to announce the company's global goal of reducing the absolute use of virgin plastic in the company's plastic packaging footprint by 2025," Walmart spokesman Randy Hargrove said in an email
.
In response to Walmart's commitment, As You Sow withdrew a shareholder proposal submitted in January 2021 to Walmart and nine other consumer goods retailers, according to a statement
.
The statement also mentioned that Walmart would disclose the details and scope of its virgin plastic reduction target later this year, but suggested the cuts would be "significant and firm.
" Under the agreement, the company has until December to publish a report on its current plastic usage
.
Walmart used 1.
2 million tons of plastic in its own-brand packaging in 2019, according to the latest data submitted to the Global Commitment to a New Plastics Economy initiative
.
In addition to Walmart, Keurig, Dr.
Pepper, Pepsi and Target are other major brands that have made similar promises to As You Sow
.
Of the five companies, only Keurig and Dr.
Pepper have specified a 20 percent reduction by 2025, while PepsiCo has pledged to reduce plastic use by at least 5 percent, and in its rigid plastics, according to the As You Sow statement 25% less virgin material in packaging
.
Conrad MacKerron, senior vice president of As You Sow, said: “We encourage other companies to come together to make bold, determined cuts to plastic packaging
.
Thousands of companies need to come forward and make similar commitments to ensure a significant reduction in single-use plastics globally.
use of packaging
.
”
While such commitments by major brands are becoming common practice, these companies have recently been under scrutiny from consumer and environmental groups for failing to meet deadlines, or even making no progress
