According to British automotive magazine Autocar reported on April 26, Volvo announced that it will carry out the world's largest autonomous driving public test project Drive Me London
in the UK in 2017.
The project will also be carried out
in Sweden and China.
Volvo will provide the XC90 test vehicle with a highly automated driving system to ordinary users, collecting daily actual driving data for software upgrades and future new model development
.
Volvo has still not decided how to choose the right public test candidate, and it is likely that it will be selected
from existing Volvo users or applicants.
Volvo announced that the UK's self-driving test program will be officially carried out in 2017, and 100 test vehicles will be on the road
by 2018.
At the same time, Volvo's hometown of Gothenburg, Sweden, will also conduct public tests, and China will follow suit
.
Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo, said that autonomous driving is a leap forward in the field of car safety, and the promotion of autonomous vehicles will save many lives
.
He said, "The government should actively introduce relevant policies to build infrastructure and promote self-driving cars on the road
as soon as possible.
" The auto industry cannot do this on its own and needs the help of the government
.
”
In 2015, Volvo began promoting its own autonomous driving technology, and by 2025 the company expects to sell one million electric vehicles (including pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids).
Volvo believes this ambition reaffirms Volvo's position
as a leader in the automotive technology industry of the future.
