Vancouver's New Westminster city government will begin construction of a new inner-city fibre network
this week.
The New Westminster City Government hopes to upgrade the city's network to attract high-tech and medical science innovators to the city's newest science and technology park
.
The City of New Westminster is recently expanding Royal Columbian Hospital
.
When completed, the hospital is expected to double its current footprint
.
At the same time, the municipal government also hopes that more medical and health and high-tech enterprises can settle in the industrial park near the hospital
.
Currently, Royal Columbian Hospital is the largest employer in the city of New Westminster, providing 3,500 jobs
in the city.
It is expected that by the completion of the expansion, the number of employees at the hospital will increase to 6,000
.
The government hopes to upgrade nearby infrastructure alongside the expansion of the hospital to attract more businesses
.
Blair Fryer, a spokesman for the New Westminster city government, said they have always made attracting high-tech companies a long-term focus of the city's long-term
development.
They currently have the ability to
attract similar businesses in their urban areas.
They have very convenient transportation, many day stations, and now they have fast internet service
.
New Westminster's fiber optic network will first be laid along Highway 1
.
In the second phase, which is expected to be completed next year, fiber optic service
will also be available along 18th Street in New Westminster and Uptown.
Industrial and commercial areas will enjoy fiber optic networks first, and high-rise buildings and apartments will also enjoy fast networks
earlier than low-density residential areas.
