On March 31, 2016, Tohoku Electric Power Company announced that it will study hydrogen manufacturing technology
to expand the introduction of renewable energy.
The company will use electricity generated by solar power to produce and store hydrogen to see if this method can be used as a measure
to deal with fluctuations in output power in the same way as batteries.
In terms of expanding the introduction of renewable energy, how to respond to fluctuations in output caused by meteorological conditions has become a major issue
.
As a national verification project, Northeast Electric Power has previously been committed to using battery technology to solve the problem of
output power fluctuation.
The goal of this research related to hydrogen manufacturing is to achieve the same effect
as storage batteries.
Tohoku Electric Power will install new solar power generation equipment and hydrogen production equipment
at its R&D center in Sendai.
Electricity generated by solar power is used to electrolyze water, thereby producing hydrogen and storing it
.
The resulting hydrogen is then used as fuel to generate electricity to power the R&D center
.
The experimental equipment consists of a solar power generation facility of about 50kW, a storage battery of about 60kW, a water electrolytic hydrogen production plant of about 5Nm3/h, a hydrogen adsorption alloy hydrogen storage tank of about 200Nm3 (equivalent to an discharge of about 300kW), and a fuel cell of 10kW or less
.
The detailed design of the research system is scheduled to begin in April, and research on hydrogen manufacturing will begin in March 2017
.
From the perspective of energy saving, improving energy security and reducing environmental load, hydrogen energy is expected to become an important energy source
.
Through this research, Northeast Electric Power hopes to gain knowledge and experience
related to hydrogen energy.
