According to the conclusion of the UK's Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), upgrading the soon-to-be-decommissioned onshore wind farm with new equipment is expected to save consumers more than 77 million pounds (about 680 million yuan) in energy costs
per year.
Upgrading ageing onshore wind farms could save the UK $680 million a year
ECIU said shutting down a successfully functioning wind farm would mean the UK could lose some of its most productive renewable energy facilities
.
ECIU said that instead of closing onshore wind farms that were supposed to be closed in the next five years, and instead equipped with modern, high-efficiency turbines, the UK's generation capacity could increase by more than 1.
3 GW
.
ECIU notes that this means generating more than 3 terawatt hours of electricity per year, enough to power
about 800,000 homes.
Jonathan Marshall, energy analyst at ECIU, said: "It makes sense to retrofit the first wind farms to be built, as these are often located in areas with
the best wind energy resources.
Existing infrastructure, including grid interconnection, can also be reused or upgraded
at lower costs than new construction.
