The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has announced the commencement of commercial operation
of Unit 2 of Barakah, the UAE's first nuclear power plant.
It is reported that Unit 2 reached the critical state for the first time in August 2021 and began supplying power
to the grid on September 14.
Together with Barakah Unit 1, which began commercial operations in April 2021, the output of Barakah Unit 2 means that nuclear energy is now supplying 2,800 megawatts of electricity
to the UAE grid.
"Less than a year after commencing commercial operations of Unit 1 in April 2021, we have now successfully commenced commercial operations of Unit 2 in accordance with UAE regulatory requirements and the highest international safety and quality standards," said
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Managing Director and CEO of ENEC.
ENEC has taken the lessons learned from Unit 1 and applied them to Unit 2, helping it achieve this latest important milestone in a more efficient manner while ensuring that all standards
continue to be met.
"Given that the plant's four APR-1400 units were built in pairs, this milestone marks the commercial delivery of
the first two units.
"
"By achieving this milestone, we further strengthen the UAE's energy security and our drive to rapidly decarbonise the UAE's power sector, contributing significantly to
the UAE's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
"
The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is regulated
by the UAE Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR).
Regulators have confirmed that the plant's operator, Nawah Energy, has met all regulatory requirements
to reach this stage.
Mariam Almheiri, UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said the commercial operation of Unit 2 was a "milestone milestone" for the UAE as it continued to push forward the rapid decarbonization
of its power sector.
"The importance of the Barakah plant in achieving net-zero emissions is becoming increasingly evident as more units come online, with all four units coming online to provide 25% of the UAE's electricity while reducing carbon emissions
by 22.
4 million tonnes per year.
"
It is reported that Barakah's units 3 and 4 are in the final stages of commissioning: unit 3 is undergoing operational preparations after completion in November 2021, and unit 4 is in the final stage
of construction.
ENEC said the entire Barakah nuclear power plant construction is now more than
96 percent complete.
