The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR), an independent nuclear regulator in the UAE, issued Nawah Energy an operating license
for Unit 2 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra area on March 9.
According to a statement from UAE nuclear energy company ENEC, the operating license, which is estimated to be valid for 60 years, authorizes Nawah to commission and operate Unit 2 of the Barakah nuclear power plant
.
FANER reviewed 14,000 pages of operating permit applications for Units 1 and 2, conducted more than 220 inspections, and requested more information on Unit 2's 59 articles on reactor design, safety and other issues to ensure the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant fully complies with all regulatory requirements
.
Following the obtaining of the operating permit, Nawah will conduct a period of trial operation in preparation for commercial operation, in which FANER will conduct round-the-clock inspections through its resident inspectors at the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant to ensure that the fuel loading and power addition process
is completed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
The Barakah nuclear power plant, the first nuclear power plant in the Arab world, is located in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafrah region and is part of
efforts to diversify the energy mix in the Gulf region.
When completed, Barakah, built by Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), will have four reactors with a total capacity of 5,600 megawatts (MW), roughly equivalent to 25 percent of the UAE's
peak demand.
In August 2020, Unit 1 of the nuclear power plant was connected to the national grid, and in December it reached 100%
reactor power during testing.
Hamad Al Kaabi, vice chairman of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR) and UAE representative of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), revealed that commercial operations of Unit 1 are expected to begin
this year.
Construction of Unit 1 at the plant began in 2012 and was originally scheduled to start up in 2017, but it wasn't until February 2020 that FANER granted a license
to operator Nawah Energy Company.
At present, the construction progress of Unit 3 has been 94% completed, and Unit 4 is 87%
complete.
