Nawah Energy Company (Nawah), a joint venture nuclear operations and maintenance subsidiary of the UAE Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco), announced that the reactor of Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the UAE's first nuclear power plant, has reached 80% rated power
.
This is an important step in the ongoing Unit 1 Power Boost Test (PAT), which involves slowly increasing reactor power levels
while collecting data and adjusting control and safety systems.
Throughout the process, Unit 1 systems are monitored and tested to ensure that they meet national regulatory requirements and the highest international standards
for safety, quality and reliability.
The implementation of PAT is carried out
under the supervision of the Federal Nuclear Regulatory Authority (FANR), the UAE's independent nuclear regulator.
Since the Barakah nuclear power plant was built, the agency has carried out more than 280 inspections
.
The operations team of Unit 1 is now working to increase its electricity production to 100%, which is the final stage
of PAT.
After reaching 100% power, Unit 1 will be gradually shut down to enable inspection interruptions
.
During the months-long inspection shutdown, Unit 1's systems will be scrutinized and planned maintenance will be carried out to ensure their safety and reliability
prior to commercial operation.
