The United Arab Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced that Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has begun commercial operation
on April 6, local time.
The plant, operated by Nawah Energy, has been the largest single power station
in the UAE since reaching 100% electricity generation in early December.
ENEC said the 1,400 MW unit in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra area is currently "providing constant, reliable and sustainable power around the clock.
"
After a period of extensive testing under the supervision of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulator, Barakah Unit 1 began commercial operation
.
To date, the agency has conducted 312 independent inspections
of the plant.
ENEC said the reviews were conducted in conjunction with more than 42 assessments and peer reviews conducted
by the IAEA and the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, CEO of ENEC, said: "After more than a decade of strategic planning, project development and construction, today we confidently announce that this marks the beginning
of a new chapter in the UAE's transition to clean energy.
”
Sama Bilbao, Director General of the World Nuclear Association, said: "The UAE's commitment to a clean energy future will ensure sustainable socio-economic development
for everyone in the country.
If we are to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, nuclear power will be at the heart of
the energy transition.
”
Construction of the Barakah nuclear power plant, led by a consortium led by Korea Electric Power Corporation, began in 2012 and includes four APR-1400 units
.
At present, Unit 2 has completed the fuel loading process and is expected to be put into commercial operation
in the second half of this year.
The construction of units 3 and 4 reached 94% and 89%
respectively.
Barakah One Company, ENEC's subsidiary responsible for the financial and commercial activities of the Barakah project, signed a power purchase agreement with Emirates Hydro in 2016 to purchase all of the plant's electricity
for the next 60 years.
