Uniper is building a gas-fired power plant in Germany for the first time in a decade as the energy grid comes under increasing pressure to cope with the increase in intermittent renewables, Reuters reported
    .

It is understood that the group has already operated a number of gas and oil-fired power stations and began operations
    on October 1, 2022.
This will be the first new gas-fired power plant in Germany since Irsching 4, which opened in 2011
    .

Uniper said the new blocks will not serve the market, but will be available
for a short period of time as long as there is a risk to network stability.

"Their high flexibility makes gas-fired power plants ideal for balancing the increasing amount of uncontrolled power generated by wind and solar energy
    ," said Uniper's COO.
Given the expected steady earnings, the project will further advance our strategy to significantly increase revenue
that is not dependent on the wholesale market.

Germany's energy sector has been in turmoil since the plan to phase out nuclear power in 2022 coincided with a significant increase in renewable energy capacity, so the resulting supply fluctuations
can be handled through the grid.

The contract was awarded by network operator TenneT, which, along with rivals, had called for a bid for a total capacity of 1,200 megawatts to stabilize the grid
when solar and wind resources were insufficient.
