Unilever has launched what it claims is "the most sustainable laundry detergent capsule to date", which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 16% and reduce plastic waste by 6,000 tons per ye.
The capsules are said to work best with short cycles and temperatures of 20 degrees or less, which can reduce the product's carbon footprint by 16 percent and save users up to 60 percent in energy per u.
The capsule film is said to be fully biodegradable, or "the fastest dissolving rate on the market", and the formula inside is designed to contain biodegradable active ingredients, 65% of which are derived from plant sourc.
Consumers can purchase the capsules in plastic-free cardboard packaging designed in partnership with Graphic Packaging International to be easy-to-access, child-resistant and recyclab.
Dr Keith Rutherford, Global Head of Innovation, Unilever Home Care R&D, said: "Our aim is to make sustainable cleaning products an attractive option for every consumer by bringing true innovation to established mass market produc.
The product can be found on the shelves of laundry detergent brand Dirt Is Good, which includes detergents Persil, Skip, OMO and Exc.
With the sale of the new capsules, Unilever aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all aspects of the product's life cycle, including users' laundry detergent machin.
