Grid operators in the UK and the Netherlands will explore the feasibility
of establishing a power interconnection system between the two countries to connect more offshore wind assets.
Currently, the UK has an undersea power interconnection system connecting France, Ireland and the Netherlands, but plans to build more undersea power interconnects as older coal and nuclear power plants close to increase its power supply options
.
The two countries also plan to significantly increase their offshore wind capacity to help meet their climate goals
.
Manon van Beek, CEO of Dutch grid operator TenneT, said in a joint statement: "This agreement enables us to work with North Sea National Grid to develop innovative infrastructure that will harness offshore wind power to achieve our decarbonisation targets
.
”
TenneT and National Grid said that if successful, the project will be operational in 2029, which will increase grid interconnection capacity between the two countries by 2 gigawatts (GW).
