Recently, Trinseo signed a ten-year off-take agreement with Indaver, a leading European sustainable waste recycler
.
The Indaver plant is scheduled to start in 2023
.
Under the terms of the agreement, Trinseo will purchase at least 50 percent of the recycled styrene produced by Indaver within 10 years of the plant's start-up
.
Indaver will collect post-consumer polystyrene (PS), such as yogurt jars and single-use packaging, using a consistent waste collection process, and recover and produce recycled styrene using proprietary depolymerization technology at its facility in Antwerp, Belgium
.
The reconstituted styrene produced will be sent to Trinseo's nearby plant in Tessendello, Belgium, where it will be used to manufacture recycled PS resin for dairy packaging and other applications
.
Both recycled styrene and recycled PS products will receive ISCC Plus mass balance certification
.
The properties of recycled PS are exactly the same as PS made from virgin fossil-based materials
.
PS's simple chemical structure enables infinite looping and is ideal for food packaging due to its excellent purity
.
Trinseo launched a recycled PS product for food contact applications earlier this year: STYRON™ CO2RE™ CR55 PS resin
.
This particular product has been supplied to a leading European yogurt brand for the production of the first yoghurt jars made from food-contact compliant PS recycled material, which will be launched in France in May 2021
.
Trinseo actively collaborates with like-minded customers, suppliers and stakeholders to create innovative circular solutions
.
Trinseo firmly believes that recycling is the future, and is committed to making its own contribution to building a circular economy
.
Indaver is equally committed to a circular economy, looking to create value from waste and focusing on ensuring the high quality of recycled products by eliminating impurities
.
Over the past 10 years, Indaver has become an expert in ensuring that its final products meet high quality specifications through innovative chemical processes
.
Both companies are committed to making their own contribution to the realization of a circular economy through technological innovation, and have been exploring mutually beneficial cooperation models for the past three years
.
