The Government of Timor-Leste announced the opening of an international public tender for the construction and installation of an undersea fibre optic cable system
connecting Timor-Leste and northern Australia.
The tender follows the government's approval in November 2020 for projects to deploy fibre-optic submarine cables to Darwin and Port Hedland
.
Timor-Leste Deputy Prime Minister Jose Reis revealed that the cost of $40-60 million is expected to be based on a cooperative model, or 80% borne by Timor-Leste and 20%
by Australia.
Depending on the final selection, the project could be completed
by September 2022 or mid-2023.
The connection is based on a proposal submitted by Vocus Group under which 250 km of submarine cables could be deployed to interconnect
Timor-Leste with the 2,100 km North West cable system.
