According to Axis News London, August 21, Axis analysis of flow data shows that the Netherlands is expected to become a net importer of natural gas for the first time this year, because the decline in domestic production has eroded the Netherlands' decades-long historical position
as a flexible supplier of natural gas in northwest Europe.
So far this year, the Netherlands has imported more pipeline gas than an exporter, mainly for the first time since the Netherlands began producing natural gas in the
1950s.
According to data from network operator GTS, as of August 17, Dutch natural gas imports exceeded exports by 255 million cubic meters this year, while from January to August last year, Dutch natural gas exports exceeded imports by about 5 billion cubic meters
.
For the Netherlands, it is unusual for gas imports to exceed exports during the summer months of low demand, but this year's deficit began in March and has steadily widened
month by month.
The Netherlands produces low-calorie gas and exports it to Germany, Belgium and France, while importing high-calorie gas
from Russia and Norway.
