New research from the Climate Accountability Institute shows that 20 fossil fuel companies worldwide account for one-third
of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Specifically, the exploitation of the world's oil, gas and coal reserves by these enterprises is directly linked
to more than one-third of the planet's carbon emissions.
The new study found that the top 20 companies on the list contribute 35% of all energy-related carbon dioxide and methane emissions globally, adding a total of 480 billion tonnes of
CO2 equivalent since 1965.
The top five polluters were Saudi Aramco, Chevron, Gazprom, ExxonMobil and National Iranian Oil Company
, the Climate Responsible Institute said in the analysis.
The remaining 15 businesses also include BP of the UK, Royal Dutch Shell, Pemex of Mexico, ConocoPhillips, Iraqi National Oil Company and Brazil's Pertobas
.
In 1965, the president of the American Petroleum Institute briefed the industry on research
on climate change caused by fossil fuels.
As Desmog reports, "The essence of the report is that there is still time to spare the peoples of the world the catastrophic consequences of pollution, but time is running out
.
" ”
But, along with many other warnings, this one has been completely ignored and plunged the world into a climate crisis
.
In fact, this is in stark contrast to the current industry stance expressed by Mohammed Barkinto, head of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, who said this summer that climate activists are the biggest threat to the industry and that they are making false claims and misleading the public
.
According to Economic Watch, it issued an unscientific warning
about global warming.
Mohammed Barkindo said: "Civil society is mistaken for oil as the cause of
climate change.
”
12 of the top 20 companies are state-owned
.
According to the latest analysis by the Climate Responsible Institute, they collectively account for 20% of total emissions, led by Saudi Aramco, which alone accounts for more than
4% of global emissions.
For investor-owned companies, California-based Chevron is the largest source of pollution, behind Saudi Aramco, and ExxonMobil in third
.
Household names such as Shell, BP and ConocoPhillips also made the list of 20 companies
.
Michael Mann, one of the world's leading climate scientists, told the Guardian that the findings highlight the "enormous contribution"
of fossil fuel companies to the climate crisis.
At Chile's upcoming climate talks in December, he called on politicians to take urgent steps to reduce industrial activity
