Recently, Saturnos, an Indian researcher backed by Saudi Arabia, announced that it will publish independent test results for its Enhanced Altered AluminumIon (Ea2I) battery, and plans to launch a solid-state rechargeable aluminum battery
in 2022.
It is said that once the battery is put into production, it will become the world's first commercial aluminum-ion solid-state battery
.
Moreover, according to reports, aluminum ion solid-state batteries are 50% cheaper than lithium-ion battery technology, and have advantages
in energy density, life, and safety.
The energy density of this aluminum ion battery is more than 1500Wh/L, and it is expected to deliver more than 600Wh/kg of energy, as a comparison, the energy density of lithium-ion batteries is 150~350Wh/kg, and the ternary lithium batteries on the market are generally around 180Wh/kg, and the latest sodium ions developed by CATL are 70~200Wh/kg
.
Saturnose claims that a set of 15kW solid-state aluminum-ion batteries will weigh up to 565kg, support an electric vehicle range of 1,200 kilometers, and last at least 20,000 charge-discharge cycles, providing a stable life
of up to 15 years in car use.
Not only that, because it does not use cobalt or nickel, this aluminum battery will not have the problem of lithium ion crystallization and thermal runaway fire, and the cathode of the battery system adopts a high-energy, disordered rock salt structure, and uses aluminum and niobium and solid electrolyte, which can effectively improve safety
.
It is recognized by industry insiders that aluminum-ion batteries are a promising next-generation battery technology that can meet future energy delivery needs
.
At present, based on data alone, Saturnos' aluminum ion solid-state battery has the advantages of safety, stability and long-term battery life, and the data is very "perfect"
.
However, the actual performance of the battery will not be verified
until the battery is actually mass-produced.
