Greenlink Interconnect has appointed engineering consultancy WSP to lead the €400 million Welsh Ireland electricity interconnection project
.
The Welsh-Ireland Greenlink Power Interconnection will undergo a final assessment
A 500 MW HVDC power interconnection is under development and construction will begin in
2020.
Over the course of its operations, the interconnect project is expected to save Irish consumers around €800 million, while also improving the UK's access to Ireland's vital renewable energy generation, as well as increasing security of
supply in both countries.
The Greenlink power interconnect will have a converter station at each end, connected by two cables and one fiber optic cable
.
The cables will run from the Big Island substation in Wexfordshire underground and below sea to the freshwater western beaches of Wales and then continue via underground cable to the Pembroke substation
.
WSP will conduct a final cost and technical assessment of the power interconnection project and will run the procurement process for the entire HVDC system, including 205 km of underground and submarine cables
.
As lead designer and project lead, Designer Stage said WSP will also ensure the safety
of those who build, operate and maintain the project.
Dyan Stephenson, WSP Project Director, said: "Our experienced team has worked on existing Moyle Interconnect and East-West Interconnect projects
between the UK and Ireland.
We are excited to partner with the Greenlink team and continue to lead the way in this market to ensure the successful delivery
of this major project.
" ”
Simon Ludlam, Greenlink's Project Director, said: "Greenlink represents important internal investment at local level on both sides of the Irish Sea and supports the UK's and Ireland's national energy security and low carbon strategies
.
In awarding this contract to WSP, we are pleased to be able to leverage their experience and expertise to continue the development of
the project.
" ”
With the support of the Irish and UK governments, the Greenlink Power Interconnection Project has been identified by the EU as a project of common interest
.
It also receives funding
from the European Commission through the Connected Europe Fund.
