The Victorian government has reportedly made a commitment to provide 10,000 homes with half-price solar cells
if it wins the November election.
The pledge follows a $1.
3 billion pledge by the Labour government to pay half
of the cost of installing solar panels in 650,000 homes over the next 10 years.
Under the announced plan, homeowners can apply for a 50% discount
on the installation of battery storage units if solar panels have been installed.
The scheme is capped at $4,838 per household for the first year before gradually falling to $3,714 by 2026 as the cost of installing batteries is expected to fall.
Australia's prime minister also revealed that the Victorian government has contracts
with six solar and wind farms.
He said 640,000 Victorian homes would be provided with renewable energy
by 2020.
Victoria has set a legislative renewable energy target that calls for 25 per cent of energy generation to come from renewable sources by 2020 and 40 per cent
by 2040.
The state government also said that by 2020, the six development projects will generate a total of 928 megawatts of electricity, enough to provide renewable electricity
to 640,000 homes.
