Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas said today that it has decided to install its 15-megawatt offshore turbine prototype
at the Osterild National Test Center in West Jutland, Denmark.
The giant 280 m (918.
6 ft) tall V236-15 MW turbine will be installed in Osterild in the second half of 2022 and is expected to generate its first electricity
in the last quarter of the same year.
In the initial phase of operation, Vestas will collect the data needed to obtain a type certificate as a milestone
for series production in 2024.
The company calculates that the annual production of the V236-15.
0 MW is about 80 GWh, enough to power
about 20,000 European homes.
The prototype is expected to be the tallest and most powerful wind turbine
ever installed.
It will surpass GE Renewables' Haliade-X prototype in Rotterdam, which recently began operating
at 14 megawatts.
The Haliade-X series is available in 14 MW, 13 MW or 12 MW capacities
.
Meanwhile, rival Siemens Gamesa announced the latest model is the 14 MW SG 14-222 DD, which has a power boost that reaches 15 MW
.
This summer, China's Mingyang Smart Energy Group launched a 16-megawatt hybrid offshore wind turbine, which is scheduled to go into commercial production
in 2024.
Vestas said that the development of the prototype is already underway
.
The blade mold was developed
at its blade factory in Lem, Denmark.
Production of the 115.
5-meter prototype blade will begin
later this year at Vestas' offshore blade plant in Nakskov.
The cabin will be developed and assembled
at the offshore nacelle plant located in Port Odenselindo.
Vestas launched the V236-15.
0 MW model in February this year and secured its first pre-tenderer qualification for the model at the 900MW He Dreiht project in Germany in July
