The Commerce Department has completed an investigation into steel imports and aluminum imports, which could lead to new tariffs on imports from China, and its recommendations are being reviewed
by other agencies, people familiar with the matter said.
While the Commerce Department must submit its recommendations to President Donald Trump by January 2018 at the latest, according to the statutory deadline, its investigation into whether steel and aluminum imports threaten national security has been slower
than many expected when it began in April.
Trump has the final
say on whether to seek a solution by imposing tariffs and quotas or negotiating with foreign producers.
Four metals industry sources, who requested anonymity, said the aluminum report was under review
.
If the Commerce Department determines that imports threaten U.
S.
security, Trump has 90 days to decide on his own initiative
