According to the new comprehensive business assessment, the Barakah nuclear power plant, the UAE's first nuclear power plant, is expected to be delayed in late 2019 or early
2020.
The UAE Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) has confirmed that the UAE's first nuclear power plant and the first nuclear power plant project in the Middle East will not come online before the end of 2019, possibly in early
2020.
The announcement comes after Nawah Energy, the project's operator
, completed an integrated operational business assessment.
With the completion of the first reactor announced earlier this year, construction of the Barakah nuclear power plant in Al Dhafra has entered an "advanced phase"
.
According to state news agency Wam, the process of starting up the first of the four reactors now appears to take longer than initially expected, aiming to ensure nuclear safety as well as the highest standards
of safety.
Nawah, a joint venture between the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), must obtain a license from the FANER (Federal Nuclear Administration) before it can start operations
.
A year ago, ENEC said it had largely completed its first reactor with KEPCO and hoped to begin operations
in 2018.
Construction of the plant began in 2011 with a total investment of $25 billion and was originally scheduled to be operational
as early as 2017.
Nawah CEO Mark Reddemann said the revised operating date was the result of
a review based on "global nuclear standards.
"
As the first nuclear power plant in the Middle East, Barakah is expected to generate about 25 percent of the UAE's electricity demand
when all four reactors are operating.
