Italy's Eni Group, Japanese biotech company Euglena and Petronas said they are jointly studying the possibility
of building and operating a biorefinery within the Bienjaran Integrated Plant in southern Malaysia.
The three companies said in a joint statement that they are conducting a technical and economic feasibility assessment of the proposed project, and that the investment decision is expected to be made within 2023 and completed and put into production
in 2025.
The biorefinery will be adjacent to Petronas' existing integrated refinery and petrochemical production facilities to produce sustainable aviation fuel for aircraft, as well as hydrogenated vegetable oil
for road vehicles, diesel-powered trains and marine transport.
The biorefinery is expected to have the capacity to process approximately 650,000 mt/d of raw materials to produce up to 12,500 b/d of biofuel
.
The three companies said that the raw materials used in the plant will not compete with raw materials in the food chain, mainly vegetable oils, animal fats and waste from vegetable oil processing, and other biomass including microalgae oil will be explored in the medium term
.
