In 2005, Academician Jia Chengzao said in the monograph "China's Petroleum Geology Theory and Onshore Oil and Gas Exploration Strategy in the Early 21st Century" that the new generation of petroleum geology theory should have 6 characteristics:
1) The inheritance and development of the theory of hydrocarbon generation in the basin of eastern continental lakes and the theory of complex oil and gas agglomeration zone;
2) The comprehensive theory of oil and gas exploration can reflect the diversity, complexity and exploration pertinence of China's oil and gas basins, not just a reflection of a single discipline or a single theory;
3) Face and answer new challenges and new questions in geological theory raised by China's oil and gas exploration in the early 21st century;
4) Focusing on the new discoveries and new understandings of lithology, foreland and deep oil and gas exploration practices in the east and west of China in recent years, especially the major breakthroughs in natural gas exploration in the central and western basins and the new progress in the exploration of lithology-stratigraphic oil and gas reservoirs in the eastern basin;
5) Draw on the major progress of basic petroleum geology research in recent years, including the research progress of basic disciplines such as basin structure, sedimentary and reservoir, sequence strata, and organic geochemistry;
6) The common crystallization
of the wisdom of China's petroleum exploration and scientific researchers.

of the majority of petroleum geology workers.
