According to foreign media news, the Kativik Regional Government (KRG) has obtained the remaining funds
needed to complete the Eastern Arctic Submarine Fiber Network (EAUFON) project.
In addition to funding from federal and provincial governments, KRG received a total of $53.
4 million in funding
from federal funds administered by the Canadian Radio, Television and Telecommunications Commission.
The EAUFON project aims to connect five communities in northern Quebec that rely primarily on satellite links (Puvirnituq, Kuujjuaraapik, Whapmagoostui, Umiujaq and Inukjuak).
The deployment contract was awarded to Alcatel Undersea Network ASN
in October 2020.
Work on the system began
in August 2021.
According to Dan Pellerin, a telecommunications consultant at KRG, all cables and electronics had been laid as of October 1
, 2021.
Dan Pellerin said: "We are now testing, commissioning and inspection and training"
.
In addition, Pellerin revealed that it hopes that the fiber network will be operational by January 2022 at the latest
.
Looking ahead, in 2022, the project will continue to extend along the coast to the Hudson Channel, connecting Akulivik, Ivugivik, Saluit and Kangisujak
.
