The 770-kilometer ALVAL/ORVAL submarine cable system connecting Algeria and Spain has been put into commercial operation, eventually providing Algeria with a capacity
of up to 40Tbps.
It is reported that the system was originally scheduled to be put into operation in December 2019, but due to financing, legal, management and technical constraints, the project was delayed
.
The ALVAL/ORVAL submarine cable system has four pairs of optical fibers that connect Algiers with Åland (Algeria) and Valencia (Spain
).
The submarine cable systems currently accessed by Algeria include the SEA-ME-WE 4 system, which telecommunications between Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Italy, Tunisia, Algeria and France
.
The other is the Medex cable, which was launched in early 2019 and connects Algeria's fiber-optic internet network with international networks, allowing Algeria to connect to the United States and Asia
throughout the Mediterranean.
