The European Investment Bank (EIB) has decided to finance 38.
5 million euros ($46.
6 million) for a solar project in Burkina Faso
.
According to Sonabel, Burkina Faso's national power utility, the financing will be used to expand a solar power plant in the country, with the goal of increasing its capacity from the current 37 MW to 50 MW, thus helping to cope with the 10% annual increase in electricity demand
.
It is reported that the expansion project, with a total cost of about 70.
5 million euros, is operated
by the national power company Sonabel.
The expansion of the project will not only increase the power generation of its power station by one-third, but also help Sonabel reduce the need
to import electricity.
According to the European Investment Bank, Burkina Faso's electricity supply is currently limited
by the capacity of the transmission system used to import electricity from southwestern neighbor Côte d'Ivoire.
