According to foreign media news, the transatlantic EllaLink cable system connecting Europe and Latin America has entered commercial operation
.
The 6,200-kilometer cable has landing stations in Sinés in Portugal and Praia Grande near São Paulo (Brazil), and branches to Kourou (French Guiana), Madeira in the Portuguese archipelago and Praia
in Cape Verde, an African island.
At the same time, the system incorporates Infinera's ICE6 800G coherent technology, enabling EllaLink to offer advanced customer products and services that support speeds
of more than 100Tbps between Portugal and Brazil.
In addition, the network supports a 30Tbps link
from Portugal to Madeira.
Future network expansion will enable EllaLink to expand its submarine network to French Guiana, Mauritania, the Canary Islands, and Morocco
.
In January, system operator EllaLink announced that the system will be fully operational in the second quarter of this year, providing an unprecedented level
of international connectivity between the two continents.
As originally planned, the system was scheduled to go on production in late 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic affected the progress of construction, delaying the project
.
In January 2019, cable operators EllaLink and Alcatel Marine Network (ASN) announced that construction of the EllaLink submarine cable system
had begun.
It is also the first submarine cable system
directly connected between Latin America and Europe.
In May 2019, ASN launched an ocean path survey to provide the best path
for the cable.
According to the plans at the time, the investigation was completed in 2019 and the laying of the submarine cable will be initiated in early 2020 to ensure that the project is operational by the end of 2020
