According to Reuters, the Polish government is looking to reduce the impact
of soaring electricity prices on households by helping suppliers or mitigating consumer taxes.
Parkiet reported citing draft
regulations prepared for the Department of Energy.
The move would be the latest costly proposal
from the ruling Law and Justice Party ahead of this month's municipal elections.
The party came to power in 2015 and promised to increase spending
on roads and air quality.
Electricity prices on the Polish Electricity Exchange rose by 60-70%
in the year to September due to rising coal prices and rising carbon permitting costs.
Earlier this year, the head of the energy market regulator said higher prices must be reflected in household bills, but the energy minister said prices would remain unchanged
.
Parkiet said the Department of Energy has developed two proposals to help families, both of which are funded
by selling EU carbon emission permits.
He also said that included supporting most state-run electricity providers, although this could violate the EU's state aid rules
.
Another suggestion is a potential tax deduction
for families.
