Papua New Guinea operator DataCo has revealed that the Coral Sea submarine fibre optic cable system (CS2) between Sydney in Port Moresby was originally planned to be suspended from May 22, 2022 to May 29, 2022, and has been postponed to October
2022.
The delay was considered "a critical preventive measure to mitigate serious issues
over the life of the asset.
" "After the CS2 cable was commissioned in February 2020, a shunt fault was detected in early 2021, posing a risk
to ongoing smooth operation.
DataCo clarified that the internet outage that occurred last week and affected the service on CS2 was not a system failure, but a device failure in the DataCo node, which was restored
on May 15, 2022.
