Philippine Solar plans to invest $1 billion to build a 2 gigawatt-per-year solar panel production plant
in the province.
Philippine Solar said in a statement on Wednesday that the first phase of the project will begin operations by the end of this year and the plant will be completed
within three years.
Construction of the plant will begin in the third quarter of 2016
.
According to the company, the procurement of manufacturing equipment
has already begun.
The company noted that it will use German technology to produce low-cost, high-efficiency solar panels
.
The plant has an annual production capacity
of 2 gigawatts.
Leandro Leviste, president of the company, said: "More and more solar manufacturing is moving from China to Southeast Asia, and we believe the Philippines may contribute to this trend
.
The Philippines has some of the best workers in the world, a huge solar market at home, and increased demand
for export plants.
He further explained that the company plans to reduce panel prices, control the supply chain, and support the new government's manufacturing development agenda
.
The company also said that 7 foreign solar manufacturers have already expressed interest in participating in the project
.
The company expects orders to reach at least 500 MW
by mid-2017.
Initially, it will use the solar panels it produces for its own projects, after which it will be sold to Europe and the United States
