The Transmission Corporation of Nigeria (TCN) has revealed that it has received US$1.
63 billion from sources, including the federal government and multilateral agencies, to assist it with its Transmission Transformation and Expansion Program (TREP) to increase its transmission capacity to 8,100 megawatts (MW).
The company's Managing Director, Mr.
Usman Mohammed, revealed this in a meeting with reporters, noting that the $1.
63 billion will ensure that TCN will increase transmission capacity from the current 5,000MW to 8,100MW
within a few months.
In 2015, Mohammed said that the capacity of the distribution company (Discos) was about 3,500MW, while the capacity of the transmission and generation companies was 5,000MW and 4,000MW respectively, but that has changed
.
"As of December 2017, we had a combined peak of 5,224MW and generated just over 7,000MW.
The problem of inadequate transmission and distribution infrastructure remains evident
.
”
The federal government has decided to recapitalize TCN but wants owners of distribution companies to recapitalize their businesses to enable Nigerians to take full advantage of the massive investment
in power transmission assets.
