Researchers at St.
Petersburg University in Russia have launched a new wireless power transfer (WPT) system that can maintain 80% power transmission efficiency at a distance of 20 centimeters, with minimal
attenuation of transmission efficiency with increasing distance.
The research results, published in the latest issue of Applied Physics Letters, can be used in areas where
wireless charging over the air is required.
The wireless power transfer system was first proposed by the famous Tesla company in the 20th century, and it was not until 2007 that scientists at MIT demonstrated its feasibility by driving a 60-watt light bulb
two meters away with a conversion efficiency of 45%.
The new wireless power transfer system is based on the principle of resonant coupling, similar to an opera singer making a sound powerful enough to transfer energy to a wine glass with the same resonant frequency, causing it to shatter
.
Under the condition of coil resonance at the same frequency, one resonant copper coil can transfer energy to another second resonant copper coil, and it is required that there are no other objects with the same resonance frequency nearby to ensure that it is not affected
.
Because magnetic fields have a weak coupling effect on most other objects, including the human body, the use of magnetic field coupling in WPT systems further reduces unintended interactions
.
The researchers improved the efficiency
of the WPT system by reducing power losses in power transmission in two ways.
First, the traditional copper ring
is replaced by a "high dielectric constant and low loss dielectric resonator".
Second, unlike the commonly used magnetic dipole mode, the researchers used the magnetic quadrupole mode, which reduces radiation loss
.
The researchers said that in the future, it is planned to further improve the efficiency of the new wireless power transfer system and reduce the size of the resonator to be closer to practical applications
