According to foreign media reports, the UK's Oil and Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) has launched an industry-backed "Facility of the Future" program, which it says could help release more than 3.
5 billion barrels of crude oil reserves in marginal fields on the British continental shelf
.
OGTC said in an organizational statement that the plan will develop "lower-cost, reusable smart facilities that can be operated remotely from a control center on land.
"
These facilities are expected to create new, skilled land-based jobs
.
Chris Pearson, manager of the UK Centre for Marginal Discovery Solutions, said in an organisational statement: "If we want to fully exploit marginal discoveries on the UK shelf and maximise the economic recovery of the UK shelf, we must adopt a new, smarter and more automated approach
to developing oil and gas fields.
”
According to OGTC, there are more than 360 marginal discoveries on the UK continental shelf, each with reserves between 3 million and 50 million barrels of oil equivalent
.
According to OGTC, it is not economical
to exploit these marginal discoveries using existing methods.
Established in October 2016, OGTC's objectives include helping to maximise economic recovery on the UK continental shelf and building energy supply chains
in the North East of Scotland.
