The New Caledonian Post and Telecommunications Office (OPT-NC) on the South Pacific island has announced that it has selected Alcatel Submarine Network (ASN) to build and install a new international submarine cable (called Gondwana-2) to Fiji and an intra-island network called Picot-2 to connect Lifou, Mare, Iles des Pins and Grande Terre

In March 2019, the New Caledonian Post and Telecommunications Office launched a tender process for two submarine cable systems with a view to providing more network capacity and resiliency to the existing Gondwana-1 cable system, which connects Noumea, New Caledonia to Sydney (Australia) and expands the domestic Picot-1 system

According to the plan, the Gondwana-2 submarine cable system will be a single fiber pair to connect Nouville, New Caledonia, to the Fijian landing battle of Suva
.
In addition, the system plans to build a branch to Vanuatu to provide a total capacity
of 200Gbps.
According to reports, the contract is worth about $4.
3 million, and construction
is scheduled to be completed in early 2022.
