A few days ago, the FLY-LION3 submarine cable connecting the French overseas island of Mayotte and the Comoros archipelago (one of the main islands of the Comoros archipelago) has landed in Itsandra
near Moroni, the capital of the Comoros.
The FLY-LION3 submarine cable, owned by a consortium of Comores Cables (55%), Societe Reunionnaise du Radiotelephone (SRR, 22.
5%) and Orange (22.
5%), will provide expansion and backup
for the existing Lower Indian Ocean networks LION1 and LION2.
The LION submarine cable, a 1,060-kilometre fibre optic cable system connecting Reunion with Mauritius and Madagascar, was commissioned in November 2009; LION2, a 2,700-kilometre connection between Mayotte and Kenya, was commissioned in April 2012
.
The FLY-LION3 cable will have two fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 20×100Gbps and a total capacity of 4Tbps
.
In addition, the system will be connected to the East African Subsea System (EASSy) cable, extending
to the East African coast.
According to the plan, the submarine cable system will be put into service
in 2019.
