The Liyang production base of LANXESS under the specialty chemicals company LANXESS recently completed the first batch of green electricity (green electricity) procurement projects, and the proportion of renewable energy used reached about 50% of the total annual electricity consumption, becoming the first production base
in Greater China of LANXESS to use green energy.
By building a new power system based on green energy, LANXESS is accelerating the low-carbon transformation of the production process, thereby helping to achieve the goal of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality
.
"With the global consensus on the low-carbon transition, the 'double carbon' goal is also moving from concept planning to comprehensive practice under the combined force of policy guidance and market
driven.
At present, energy consumption is at the core of
carbon reduction.
Our new green and low-carbon power system will provide strong support
for the reduction of carbon in the factory.
The Liyang production site will continue to seek renewable energy opportunities and is committed to doing its part to achieve the company's climate neutrality goals and China's 'double carbon' goals
.
" Chen Biao, general manager of LANXESS Liyang production base, said
.
Promote the achievement of the "double carbon" target
Green electricity refers to the production of electricity in the process of carbon dioxide emissions of zero or close to zero, its main sources are solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, etc
.
In June this year, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other seven departments issued the "Implementation Plan for Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction Synergy", which proposes to promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy, implement renewable energy alternative actions, and vigorously develop wind, solar, biomass, marine and geothermal energy
.
Under the impetus of policies, a new power system with green energy as the main body is taking shape, the proportion of the supply side has increased significantly, and the energy consumption on the demand side has also increased rapidly, laying a solid foundation
for enterprises to reduce carbon.
In the procurement of green electricity at the Liyang production site, solar power and wind power each account for 50%.
At present, wind power has been put into use in March and July this year, and solar power will be completed in August and December this year
.
It is expected that the green electricity transaction will reduce carbon dioxide emissions
by several thousand tons for the Liyang production base.
In addition, promoting the energy transformation under the background of "double carbon" is a systematic project, and efforts should be made from both the supply and demand ends to further make green electricity consumption transparent and precise, in order to explore more practical carbon reduction solutions
.
After the green electricity transaction, the Liyang production base is expected to obtain the "Green Power Certificate" issued by the National Renewable Energy Information Center and the "Green Power Consumption Certificate" issued by the Beijing Electric Power Trading Center by the end of 2022
.
The "double certificate" of green electricity is the only certificate for power users to consume green electricity, providing power users with data verification services for each kilowatt-hour green electricity transaction, power sales, production, consumption, settlement and other links, so as to realize the traceability of the whole life cycle of
green electricity consumption.
Accelerate the implementation of climate neutrality
As a chemical company, LANXESS has always put sustainability and climate protection at the heart of its strategy and integrated it into all
aspects of its production operations.
For direct emissions from production (Scope 1) and emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), LANXESS announced in 2019 that it has set a goal
of achieving climate neutrality by 2040.
To achieve this goal, LANXESS has developed a clear strategy to reduce emissions: launching large-scale climate protection projects, severing emissions from growth, and strengthening processes and technological innovations
.
In addition, LANXESS is undertaking numerous measures, including green energy procurement, and working with local communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at production sites around the world and address the challenge
of climate change.
From 2018 to 2021, LANXESS's CO2 emission equivalent will be reduced from an initial 3.
177 million tons to about 2.
591 million tons, a decrease of 7%
per year.
Although production has increased and acquisitions have been made, little additional emissions
have been generated.
From the perspective of carbon reduction, carbon emissions exist not only in the production and manufacturing process, but also in the entire industrial chain
.
Therefore, in August 2022, LANXESS also set a Scope 3 emission target, planning to achieve zero indirect emissions from upstream and downstream value chains by 2050, and launch the "Net Zero Value Chain Plan"
.
This strategy aims to achieve climate neutrality across the value chain, including the three pillars of sustainable raw materials, green logistics and climate-neutral products, and works with upstream suppliers and downstream customers to create carbon reduction capabilities
throughout the life cycle.
From green energy procurement to carbon reduction in the linkage value chain, LANXESS is exerting significant sustainable business benefits, promoting a green, low-carbon transition in production and upstream and downstream supply chains, and accelerating the achievement
of climate-neutral targets.
With its excellence in sustainability, LANXESS ranked first in the "Chemicals" category of the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index published in 2021, with a score of 87 out of 100, ranking second
in the global index.
