India's coalition cabinet has approved plans to deploy an undersea cable that will connect 11 islands in Lakshadweep to Kochi
on the Indian mainland.
The project will be funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), which is regulated by the Ministry of Telecommunications (DoT), and is being built
by the state-owned enterprise BSNL.
It is reported that the project will cost about Rs 1,072 crore, including operating expenses for a period of 5 years, which will be provided
by USOF.
Telecom Consultants India Limited (TCIL) was appointed as the technical consultant
for the project.
According to the plan, the submarine cable project will be completed and put into operation
in May 2023.
