Recently, the Indonesian government's senior minister in charge of mining supervision said that the Indonesian government will ask Indonesian Freeport PT to build a copper smelter
in Veda Bay, a new metal industrial park in Halmahera.
Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs, Luhat Panjadantan, said at a virtual seminar that the proposal had been approved by the president
.
He said the government aims to build an integrated smelting centre in Veda Bay and hopes to add a copper facility
to the nickel hub in North Maluku province.
Indonesia's Weda Bay industrial park, run by France's Eramet, China's Tsingshan Holding Group and Indonesia's state-owned mining company PT Antam, received Indonesia's national strategic project status this year and began nickel smelting operations
in April.
Freeport PT Indonesia, a local subsidiary of Freeport McMoRan, the world's largest copper producer, currently controls 51 percent of the shares by the government
.
Mining ministry officials said no changes
had been made to the smelter project at Freeport.
Freeport Indonesia was not immediately available for comment
