Singtel and five regional operators today announced a US$300 million contract to build a 6,000-kilometre submarine cable system, the Asia Link Cable System (ALC), which aims to connect Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Brunei and Hainan provinces to support economic growth
in Southeast Asia.
Co-led by Singtel and China Telecom Global Limited (CTG), the alliance includes four other regional operators – China Telecom Corporation (CTC), Globe and DITO in the Philippines, and UNN
in Brunei.
Bill Chang, CEO of Singtel Group's Corporate and Regional Data Centre business, said: "Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with rising digital demand from consumers and businesses
.
Consumers and businesses are increasingly relying on services and solutions that require higher bandwidth and lower latency connectivity to work, learn, or play
.
ALC will bring greater connectivity to the industry transformation, unlock more innovation opportunities, further enhance the digital experience of Southeast Asian consumers, and support the region's growth ambitions
.
”
According to the plan, the system has 8 pairs of fibers, each of which can transmit up to 18 Tbps
.
ALC will add more capacity and routing diversity to the existing network, enhancing the resilience
of international Internet communications through Southeast Asia.
Submarine cables are an important information infrastructure
.
With no viable alternatives, almost 100% of the international data traffic that companies consume every day is transmitted and routed through this submarine cable, which lays on the seabed
.
Singtel, one of the most technologically experienced consortium partners, has spearheaded investment in some of the earliest submarine cables in the region, including the latest 19,200km SOUTHEAST-MIDDLE-WESTERN EUROPE 6 (SEA-ME-WE 6) submarine cable system, connecting multiple countries and territories between Singapore and France, expected to be completed
in the first quarter of 2025.
According to the plan, ALC will be completed
in the third quarter of 2025.
