According to Plasteurope.
com on January 9, Futerro, a leader in polylactic acid (PLA) production in Belgium, said it plans to build a new plant in Port-Jérôme, a French industrial and port area in the Normandy region, with a planned capacity of 75,000 tons per year
.
As Galaxy Group (Brussels; www.
lactic.
com), Futerro, a wholly owned subsidiary, has begun negotiations
with local officials and regional economic development agency Caux Seine Dévelopment about the plant.
The project is likely to create 250 direct jobs and 900 jobs
in neighboring areas.
The project was completed after Futerro built its first PLA plant in Bengbu, China, in 2020 in partnership with Chinese biofermentation technology company Fengyuan
.
The Bengbu plant has a PLA capacity of 30,000 tons/year, and a new 80,000-tonne/year plant supplies lactic acid raw materials
.
The facility also supplies raw materials to another Galaxy subsidiary that produces lactic acid-based food ingredients
for the Asian market.
Plans for the French plant include a lactic acid unit for converting agricultural raw materials, a PLA conversion unit and a unit
dedicated to PLA molecule recovery.
