Emacom, a telecommunications provider in the Atlantic Madeira archipelago, has signed a contract with the developer of the EllaLink (formerly EulaLink) project to provide the first direct submarine cable system between Europe and Latin America, enabling an exclusive fibre optic connection
between Europe and Madeira.
According to current plans, EllaLink will achieve 72Tbps connectivity
between the two continents.
The 10,119-kilometer-long EllaLink submarine cable system will land in the port of Sines in Portugal and Praia Grande near São Paulo, Brazil, while also building branch lines connecting the Brazilian island nations of Fortaleza, Madeira and Cape Verde
.
Brazil's state-owned telecommunications infrastructure provider Telebras will own a 35 percent stake in the cable, Spain's IslaLink will hold 45 percent, while pan-European equity fund Marguerite II signed an agreement last week to join EllaLink submarine cable systems as a new investor
.
It is reported that the submarine cable system will be deployed by Nokia Alcatel Submarine Network (ASN) and is scheduled to be put into production
in 2020.
