Swedish battery maker Northvolt AB last week became the first European company to begin commercial shipments to automakers, contributing
to the continent's "confrontation" with Asia's dominance in the supply of energy batteries for electric vehicles within five years.
The first deliveries came from Northvolt's Skelleftea plant in Sweden and were completed
on schedule.
The company currently employs about 1,000 workers
.
While the launch of Northvolt marks a successful launch of the independent battery industry in Europe, skyrocketing prices of raw materials such as lithium and cobalt have become an issue
.
Over the years, China has forged closer ties with mining companies in Africa and South America, which could leave manufacturers elsewhere facing supply bottlenecks
.
Northvolt, which plans to scale up production for the rest of the year, recently said it had secured more than $50 billion in contracts
from electric car makers including BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo and Polestar.
Wigardt said the total number of employees at the Skelleftea plant could reach 4,000, up from a previous estimate of 3,000
.
On Monday, the company also said it had begun a joint venture with Hydrovolt in Frederikstad, Norway, on commercial EV battery recycling
.
Hydrovolt is Europe's largest EV battery recycling plant, processing around 25,000 batteries
per year.
