As part of its efforts to provide clean drinking water to people in Palestinian enclaves, the European Union has unveiled the largest solar power plant
in the Gaza Strip.
The European Union launches the largest solar power plant project in the Gaza Strip
The project will generate 0.
5 MW of photovoltaic power per day for the Southern Gaza desalination plant, providing water to 75,000 people in Gaza's Khan Younis and Rafah
governorates.
The project is being
built by London-based Palsolar.
In a press release announcing the operation of the project, the EU said it intended to provide water
to 250,000 people in southern Gaza within 18 months using new solar systems and further investments.
According to information on Palsolar's website, the project is likely to consist of Chinese or North American solar panels
from Suntech, Amerisolar, Canadian Solar or Sunpower.
Other projects under the EU Gaza Water Supply Plan could bring more good news
to Palestinian installers.
As part of the €450 million Gaza Central Desalination Plant, the largest infrastructure project in the Gaza Strip, 2.
8 MW of roofing and 13 MW of ground installation will
be built.
Solar energy will provide about 12.
5% of the project's energy needs, the EU will support 77.
1 million euros, and will provide drinking water
to 2 million people.
An EU spokesman said a separate plan to rehabilitate 46 public and private desalination plants in the occupied territories would include the construction of 86 kilowatts of solar energy, with local installers selected after tender work
