On October 21, the European Chemical Industry Commission (Cefic) issued a statement calling on the European Commission and member states to immediately develop and implement measures to limit energy prices in order to increase energy supply, encourage the reduction of energy consumption and enhance the competitiveness
of the European chemical industry.
Cefic said the measures should target the upcoming winter while paving the way
for the economy in 2023 and beyond.
Marco Mensink, Director General of CEFIC, said: "Without an urgent solution to energy prices in our sector, we are not far from collapse
.
With hundreds of companies in the European chemical industry already in survival mode, we are already starting to see the first companies to fail and need to act
now.
Cefic said the current energy crisis has reached unsustainable levels
for the European chemical industry.
Cefic said the reason for this judgment was that in the first half of 2022, the European chemical industry trade deficit reached 5.
6 billion euros, compared to the previous rare deficit in the European chemical industry
trade.
In addition, Cefic said the energy crisis is weakening the competitiveness of the European chemical industry, one of the most energy-intensive in Europe, which has to compete
in the global market with companies in regions with more favorable energy prices.
Cefic added: "The European chemical industry supplies almost all other value chains, including food, healthcare, construction and transport, and any disruption to the industry jeopardizes the EU's goal of
achieving strategic autonomy.
