In March 2022, the Biocide Products Committee (BPC) under the European Chemicals Agency ECHA held a meeting at which three opinions on the application of active substances under the EU BPR were adopted
.
The EU BPC's recommendations for the approval or disapproval of the three active substances are as follows:
1.
Dithiocyanomethane
CAS No.
: 6317-18-6 PT12 slimeicide
Dithiocyanate (methylene dithiocyanate, CAS number: 6317-18-6), this product is intended to be used by professionals in the papermaking process through intermittent or high-dose application (PT12) to control the presence of yeast, bacteria and algae in Microbial proliferation of fungi within
.
The BPC recommends that methylene dithiocyanate not be approved for use in the slimicide PT12 because it is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms and has long-term effects that could lead to environmental risks
.
2.
Propiconazole
CAS Number: 60207-90-1 PT8 Wood Preservative
Propiconazole (CAS number: 60207-90-1), used in wood preservatives (PT8), can be used as a wood fungicide to prevent wood damage and discoloration
.
This time, the European Commission concluded that propiconazole met the exclusion criteria due to its reproductive toxicity and potential endocrine disturbance
.
In principle, active substances that meet the exclusion criteria will not be approved
.
But in the absence of alternatives, active substances can be approved for reasons of public health or public interest
.
The European Commission will collect further information to carry out an evaluation, in particular information on suitable and adequate alternatives for different uses
.
3.
Pheromones
CAS Number: 78617-58-0 PT19 Repellent and Attractant
The new active substance (13Z)-Hexadec-13-en-11-yn-1-ylacetate (CAS number: 78617-58-0) is a pheromone used in the prevention of poisonous caterpillar plague, repellent and attractant agent (PT19)
.
The pheromone is encapsulated in natural wax or oil to form a gel, which is then introduced into a biodegradable polymer shell to form a sphere
.
BPC supports the approval of the active substance, but the premise of BPC's recommendation for approval is that the specific use and application method proposed by the applicant company should be restricted
.
In addition, the European Commission adopted four positive opinions for the harmonized authorization of the following substances:
Propanol (propan-1-ol)
PT1 for human surface hygiene;
Isopropanol (propan-2-ol)
Disinfectants and algaecides for indirect use on humans or animals (PT2) and disinfectants for surfaces in contact with food and animal feed (PT4);
L-(+) Lactic acid
for PT2;
Active chlorine released by sodium hypochlorite
for PT2
.
